The Most Important Foods for the Most Important Meal of the Day

Must haves for your breakfast table

Scrambled eggs

Everyone knows breakfast’s reputation for being “the most important meal of the day,” but that doesn’t mean that simply eating any breakfast is enough. As in most cases, it’s not that you eat, but what you eat. Give pancakes a pass and cut the croissants. Try these foods instead:

Eggs: If cholesterol isn’t an issue for you, eggs are a wonderful way to start the day. They are packed with protein and will keep you full till lunch and beyond. Try them poached over whole-wheat toast or scrambled with spinach and any leftover veggies from yesterday’s dinner. Prep them ahead of time by portioning out a dozen scrambled eggs with some healthy additions into a muffin tin. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes, then keep in the fridge till use.

Yogurt: Be like the Europeans and make sure yogurt is always available on your breakfast plate. Probiotics and calcium await when you incorporate yogurt into your breakfast. Add fruit or use it in a smoothie to start the day on a yogurt-y high note.

Fruit: If you prefer sweet to savory in the morning, help yourself to some fruit. Strawberries, bananas, and peaches go great on high-fiber cereal, on top of yogurt, or on their own.

Whole-wheat toast: There’s nothing wrong with starting the day off with some healthy carbs. Get your bread (and fiber) fix with whole-wheat toast or bread.
