Putting Bad Sleep to Bed

Tips for a more restful slumber

A good night’s sleep is everything. It’s the difference between acing the interview and bombing it. It’s the difference between driving safely and dozing off at the wheel. It’s essential to your mental health and physical health. Good sleep makes you thinner, look younger, and feel better. So don’t waste the precious hours you have for sleeping. Make the most out of your time in bed with these tips for a better, more meaningful, night’s sleep.

Stop Eating: Before bed snacks are nice, but make sure they are well before bed. Try to stop eating at least two hours before you go to sleep. Your body won’t be struggling to digest anything, so you’ll get better quality sleep. This is also good for your metabolism and your waistline.

Put the Phone Away: The light emitted from screens triggers parts of your brain that should be focusing on sleep, not stimulation. TVs, computers, and phones have no place in your bedroom and can confuse your would-be resting brain. Read or listen to music instead.

Keep Cool: What’s a comfortable temperature for you at bedtime might be too hot for you in the middle of the night. Keeping your room just a few degrees cooler can help you sleep more deeply and wake up less often during the night.

White Noise: If you’re easily distracted by sounds, try a white noise machine or a fan. Most machines (including apps on your phone) will have timers so you can set the time and forget it.

Try Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy really works! A few drops of lavender oil on your pillow or a lavender essential oil diffuser could help you sleep better. Additionally, using lavender scented lotion provides important hydration for your skin while you sleep.

If trying all of the above still isn’t doing the trick, you might have a sleep disorder. Talk to your doctor about a sleep study that could help identify sleep issues. Solving sleep issues will help you sleep better and live better, so don’t wait! Talk to your doctor today!
